To those who stream older games, what do you find to be the best way to get noticed?

So I have a big collection of older games and plan to stream something retro (i.e. PS2 and earlier) once a week, but I struggle with setting up the stream.
What I've been doing recently is selecting the Retro category, adding the game I'm playing at the start of the stream title, then editing the stream category afterwards with the actual title of the game so it appears in that game's VODs. Does anyone have any opinions on what encourages better viewership? I'm a new streamer with a tiny audience so any ideas (on and off-Twitch) to get new faces in the stream for these types of games would be much appreciated!
Edit: Does anyone also have any tips for how to deal with remakes? For example, I was playing the original Yakuza (PS2) yesterday on stream, but the VODs in that category are full of people playing Yakuza Kiwami (the PS4 remake). Any way to help separate from them other than hoping people use the right category?

Do the Yakuza Games reuse the same assets?

I hate to be that guy but since I am new to the series and have been going through the games, I tend to notice that majority of the Hub City assets reoccure quite frequently. Of course, this is not a bad thing but I just wanted to confirm which titles Ripped off what. Here are my thoughts.
Yakuza 1 (PS2): Debut Title
Yakuza 2 (PS2): Definitely reused a bunch of assets from Yakuza 1.
Yakuza 3 (PS3): Fresh Start, New Platform.
Yakuza 4 (PS3): Yep, heavy asset flipping from Yakuza 3.
Yakuza 5 (PS3): New Engine, some assets are imported I guess?
Yakuza 0 (PS3/4): Freshly Developed Assets to take Advantage of Next Gen.
Yakuza 6 (PS4): Newly Developed Engine, New Location.
Yakuza Kiwami (PS3/4): Directly Ripped from Yakuza 0.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4): Some New. Some Old.
Yakuza 7 (Switch): No Idea.

Weird audio glitch on Yakuza Kiwami

I just started playing yakuza kiwami on PS4 after finishing 0 and i noticed this weird distortion with Kiryu’s voice where it almost sounds like a voice changer. Does anyone know what the cause could be? it only happens in cutscenes and only when characters with deep voices speak. it might just be my headphones but idk.

The original Yakuza has been remade into a sequel to its own prequel, but although it's perfectly competent it feels outdated compared to the newer entries.
PC Gamer - Phil Savage - 74 / 100
Suffers in comparison to Yakuza 0, but is still a compelling drama and an important part of the series as a whole.

Having a lovely time at the hostess club with Majima crossdressing, fishnets and all, before he started a fight.

Updated systems, fleshed out characters, and, yes, higher fidelity graphics, all mean that this original gangster epic can sit proudly alongside the rest of the family.Kelly Pask
PC Invasion - Cameron Woolsey - 4 / 5 stars
Yakuza Kiwami is a brilliant, beautiful, and brutal remake of one of Sega's finest action RPGs, now available on PC with a host of graphical options.

What games did you finish last year? Here's my list.

Last year I decided to track all the games that I finish, from start to end. This was brought on by a conversation I had near the end of 2018 with a few friends. I was surprised to see how many games they play but never finish.
This list should have been longer, I blame resubbing to FFXIV. Those MMOs eat up your game time
Below is my list of games that I finished in 2019, what games did you finish? Join me in tracking with your own list in 2020.
Games completed in 2019

I also wanted to give a shout-out to an awesome podcast NEStalgia. They are currently playing through the NES catalog in release order. I am not affiliated with them in anyway other than being a loyal listener from the start. Give them a listen, they’ve already covered some classics like legend of Zelda, Contra and Castlevania.

2019 Year in Review + List for 2020!!

Woo, it’s time for my 2019 Year in Review post! 2019 was an incredibly hectic and busy year (I finally got my computer science degree!) which made my gaming suffer a bit. In total, I beat 34 games across 2019, with a low 0 in June and August (I was doing a lot of final project work then so that makes sense), and a high of 10 in April. Overall this is a bit below average for me, but it’s probably still a good amount for how busy I was.
Additionally, I retired 91 games! I only started keeping track of retired games this year, but I’m pretty sure that’s a lot higher than my average. I decide very quickly whether or not to stick with a game, so I guess I just went on a cleanout spree lol.
Anyway, onto the fun part! The game awards! :D

Worst Game of the Year

White Knight Chronicles (PS3)
Despite retiring so many games, I’d say that very few of those were bad. For the most part, I retired games because they just weren’t my thing. White Knight Chronicles, on the other hand was a bad time. Boring action, grindy RPG gameplay, super boing NPC escort quests early in the game, uninteresting characters and story… There isn’t really anything here that I liked. The biggest gripe in this game though (and probably the silliest gripe), is that you make your own custom character to play but your character doesn’t do any of the cool stuff, nor do they have any part in the story. They just happen to be around when the cool stuff happens while the stupid, annoying characters get to have all the fun. I imagine maybe someone might like this, but this game was just blargh for me.

Biggest Disappointments

I actually have two big disappointments for this year, and they both make me really sad since they’re both from one of my favourite developers, Gust! I got really unlucky this year and played two of their not so great games, I guess…
Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book (PS4)
I knew in advance that Atelier Sophie was particular divisive, but I was still a big let down. Technically the main draws of the Atelier series, gathering and making items via alchemy, were still good enough for me to enjoy, but a lot of other aspects just felt like huge downgrades. Less interesting characters, painfully slow progression, boring combat, and meh music made most of the game incredibly rough for me to really enjoy. If I hadn’t played any other Atelier game, perhaps it would have been so bad, but I knew how much more enjoyable the other games in the series were! It’s too bad, but hopefully I enjoy other entries more.
Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel (PS3)
Ar Tonelico Qoga almost has the opposite problem that Atelier Sophie had. Great soundtrack, characters, and story, but man the gameplay was often so incredibly tedious! For some reason Gust decided to step away from turn-based battles that the previous two entries used, and instead decided to do action battles. I wouldn’t mind that so much if they weren’t boring, lengthy, and random battles didn’t happen so frequently. Also just waaaay too much backtracking in an incredibly annoying maze-like area. Don’t get me wrong, it has some really good moments, but the really bad ones made it a pretty rough playthrough.

Best Soundtrack

Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel (PS3)
Yeah I know I just mentioned Ar Tonelico Qoga for one of my biggest disappointments of the year, but it does still have some of my all time favourite video game soundtracks. I actually started listening to many of them frequently way before I even played the game lol. Not sure about the regular tracks, but where the OST shines are in the many vocal tracks used throughout the game. It has a wide range of tracks too, from harsher songs to more light and upbeat ones. I’m not really good at explaining music, but I just love so many tracks here so much! Wish the game as a whole was better though.

Most Visually Impressive

Okami HD (Switch)
I’m sure many people here know what I’m talking about with this one! The brushwork style Okami uses in the game is pretty unique and absolutely gorgeous. It’s even better in the HD version as it’s nice and cleaned up. As a bonus, the art style also just fits so well with the game’s mechanics, as you’re using a brush to attack enemies and solve various puzzles. Okami itself didn’t quite make my top 5 games played this year, but I definitely want to give a shoutout to its aesthetics :)

Biggest Surprise

Fairune (Switch)
Fairune takes some cues from old Zelda games (which I’m not really a fan of) and combines that with some Ys-like mechanics and a cute aesthetic. At best I thought this combo would only be ok, but it ended up being a short, but incredibly enjoyable game for me. Fairune 2 (which I also played in 2019) unfortunately complicates things a bit too much for me, but the first game was a treat to play.

Best 5 Games of the Year

Woo, time for the good stuff! Initially I tried to give some sort of order to these, but I’m really bad at that so I just gave up with that ha. My favourite for the year is the only one that has a ranking with it, and the rest are just in a randomish order.
Endless Ocean: Blue World (Wii)
I really enjoy a good relaxing game, and this really fits the bill for me. It’s just so much fun to swim around looking at all the different sea creatures and exploring the various locations. Wish there were more games in this series though since I want more of this!
Yoshi’s Crafted World (Switch)
Another really chill game that’s incredibly cute. All of the levels were interesting, while at the same time never being frustrating to play. It’s fairly simple so there’s not much more to it than that, but it’s incredibly solid and a blast to play.
Fairune (Switch)
Talked a bit about this already for biggest surprise, but I liked it so much that it’s easily one of my top games for the year. It’s simple, but it was just an enjoyable game that doesn’t overstay its welcome.
Fault – milestone one (Steam)
This was another surprise for me, as I wasn’t expecting such a short visual novel to pack so much punch with its characters. While it’s technically not a complete visual novel, there’s still plenty of twists and great character moments here in the 3 hours it took for me to beat it.
Yakuza Kiwami 2 (PS4)
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is hands down my favourite game of 2019. No contest. It’s got great character moments, thrilling story, satisfying battles, and all sorts of fun mini-games to play. Heck, I often found it fun to just wander around the area, looking at everything in the environment since all that looks so good too. Plus, it has such a great mix of serious moments and silly, humorous moments. There’s just so much good here and my only complaints are incredibly minor. Really can’t wait to play Yakuza 3 next year!

New List for 2020

In 2019 I didn’t complete my list since I focused a bit too much on picking the lengthiest games in my backlog. For my next 12 in 12, I’m just ignoring game length altogether and I picked the 12 games I most want to play in 2020. Some of these aren’t quite released yet, but I stuck with games that were either already in my backlog, or ones that I knew I would be purchasing and playing right away. Also, if I end up retiring a game instead of beating it, I’ll just cross it off my list instead of replacing it. I took off a lot of games in my 2019 list and that just ended up being really annoying.
Anyway, here’s what I picked:
Yakuza 3 Remastered (PS4)
Atelier Firis: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Journey (PS4)
Ciel nosurge Offline (Vita)
Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen (PS4)
Bravely Second (3DS)
Dragon Quest Builders 2 (PS4)
Fault – milestone two side:above (Steam)
Rune Factory 4 Special (Switch)
Eiyuu*Senki – The World Conquest (Steam)
All of these games are basically ones that I really want to play because I’ve played and really enjoyed other games in the series (exception being Eiyuu*Senki, but I loved another game by the same devs). Not all of the games (Yakuza 3 Remastered, Utawarerumono Prelude, and Rune Factory 4 Special), are released yet but they’re all games I’ve been waiting a while for and that I want to play ASAP. They’re releasing pretty early in the year too so even if they’re delayed a bit, I should still be able to easily play them 2020.
The House in Fata Morgana (Vita)
Ef – the first tale (Steam)
These two I picked since u/OdaNova recommended them and they also both seem to be well regarded so I have to try them out! I always love playing/reading a good visual novel.
Rain (PS3)
This is the odd one in the bunch since I just want to play this already since I’ve had it for a while and it seems like an interesting platformy-puzzley game. I also have a really awesome PS3 theme for it and it just makes me want to play it more and more ha.
Anyway, that’s it! Thanks for reading, and hope you have a happy new year! :D

how did your adventure with the "yakuza" series started, yakuzas and yakuzettes ?

me - i played from the middle. a few years ago ps+ offered "yakuza 4" - the fourth installment of a series of games, back then known to me only from rumours calling it a "japanese gta" (spoiler alert: it turned out it isn't). and so i downloaded the game, without knowing that i signed myself for a ride that goes on to this day. i actually fell in love with the series, wasn't able to finish 4 homever - my ps+ sub on ps3 ran out. to compensate for that, after i went to work and got my first paycheck ever, i bought myself "yakuza kiwami" on ps4.
current gaming goals - buy & plat every rgg studio game (including "judgement" and "fist of the north star").

A brief review of the 12 games I played over winter break

In December of 2019 I decided to tackle my backlog which currently sits at 68 games as of today.
Just to clarify, by "finished" I mean that I either beat it or put away for good. Review scale is based on my personal enjoyment of the game and how much I respect it.
Here are my thoughts:
  1. Vanquish 12/18/19- Cool game indicative of the 360/ps3 era. Platinum Games clearly had a lower budget but still manages to absolutely nail the game play. The sliding mechanic completely flips the game from a boring cover shooter to a one of a kind shooter. The missions are repetitive as its mostly just going from one point to another shooting enemies. It doesn't help that the environments in the game all look exactly the same. The last chapters had some more variety helping the game end strong. Despite it's flaws, I fail to see why nobody played it back in 2010. 7/10
  2. Shadow of The Colossus (PS4 remake) 12/19/19- That very first moment when you don't know what the hell is going on and suddenly you need to mount this huge beast with your useless sword and bow, then you gotta slay the beast. You slay him, but rather than feeling like a bad ass, I felt guilty and ashamed for killing this monster for some ho. Great game, but by the last 4 Colossi I had enough and the game just felt like a drag to finish. My enjoyment was about a 5/6, but it gets more because I really do respect it. 7/10
  3. Tomb Raider (2013) 12/19/19- Tomb Raider series draws a lot of comparisons to uncharted series and for good reason, which just sucks. Because realistically Tomb Raider is worse in just about everything like story, writing, gunplay, soundtrack, etc. I enjoyed the puzzles, traversal was a step up, and using the bow and arrow is always a blast. The journals you find throughout the game are all voice acted which is a nice touch, and got me to actually pay attention to them. The survival elements of searching for scraps should have just been cut from the game as it didn't add anything. The game is solid, but nothing special 7/10
  4. Astro Bot Rescue Mission 12/21/19- One of the must buy VR games for sure right now. Taking advantage of VR technology to look around the environment, completely changes the collectible platformer and its what really sold this game. The platforming itself was pretty basic compared to modern platformers, so most of the fun came from how the environment interacted with you. A pure bundle of joy that never stops surprising you- 8/10
  5. Ape Out 12/23/19- I know this probably doesn't qualify as patient, but considering I got it for free I don't mind. Ape Out is a pretty fun 2 hour gorilla beat em up game. Playing it all in one go did make the final half hour a bit frustrating as the challenge escalated. The artstyle and Jazz soundtrack blended so perfectly with the gameplay, and is what makes the game truly standout. 9/10
  6. Furi 12/22/19 - The premiere boss rush video game. The electronic soundtrack is absolutely killer and goes along great with the fast paced combat. The story was absolute nonsense though, so don't expect anything interesting from that department. 8/10
  7. Ziggurat 12/24/19- I made it to the 5th floor, but never won a run. Spent about 3 hours on this game, before it felt like I had given it enough time. I had a little fun, but quickly got bored as the enemies became tedious, and I didn’t find the different perks each run to be engaging. Really interesting concept, but ultimately doesn't stand out when compared to what the roguelite market can offer in 2020. 4/10
  8. Bastion 12/23/19 - Sometimes there are games where all the ingredients are great, but the final product just doesn't click and bastion is one of them. I was expecting alot more from this game, but it just failed to grab me. The combat was boring and all the RPG elements seemed really tacked on. The only saving grace was the art style, and the soundtrack which also did nothing for me ingame. Somehow finished the game, but if you asked me what it was about I'd have trouble answering. 5/10
  9. Yakuza Kiwami ( PS4) 12/28/19- Engaging story and fun gameplay with some very frustrating and poorly designed boss fights. Majima everywhere seemed like a cool concept, but he rarely showed so I couldn’t progress that entire portion of the game. Despite all that, I play yakuza games for the story and it absolutely delivered on that front. By the end of the game I was still hungry for more yakuza, so I'll be sure to pick up Kiwami 2. 8.5/10
  10. Pony Island 1/1/20 - One of those super meta puzzle games where everything is fucking with you. Game is extremely short, a normal play-through is like 1:30 hours. The game is boring for the most part, but it's still really interesting and evokes discussion. 5/10
  11. Katana Zero 1/2/20 - This game is a vibe that just hits so right. It has a charm that only pixel art games can capture,a soundtrack perfect for its aesthetic, and gameplay that is just so goddamn tight. The main thing that holds Katana Zero back as a masterpiece is the ending. While its ok to leave loose ends open for a sequel, katana zero's ending just made the game feel unfinished. Not to mention that the game gives a false impression that your choices actually matter. Thankfully the developers are releasing a free dlc for the game, but really they're just finishing it.Not quite a classic yet- 9/10
  12. Oxenfree 1/15/2020- Just finished the game today, I gotta say I really liked it. The game has really good dialogue( puts life of strange to shame) and voice acting that just keeps you engaged throughout the story. The game invites you to do multiple playthroughs in a really cool way too that I don't wanna spoil. 8/10
If I had to recommend any three it would be Furi, Katana Zero, and Yakuza Kiwami( Play 0 first).

For my money, it is the best way to experience this particular story and improves enough of the game to make for a great time sink. Maybe certain aspects could have been tweaked to be more faithful to the source material, but the worst thing that could happen is you end up wanting to play the original to see the changes firsthand. That isn't such a terrible outcome.

While Yakuza Kiwami 2 isn't the best point of entry in the Yakuza series compared to Zero or Kiwami due to being a sequel (even if it comes with an extensive recap to catch you up on the story so far), it's a masterpiece that no fan of Japanese games should miss. Even those who typically tend to prefer Western titles might very well discover in the remake of Yakuza 2 a great way to broaden their gaming horizon.
Eurogamer - Malindy Hetfeld - No Recommendation
Yakuza continues its good run with a fine - if a little lumpy - retread of a modern classic.
Game Informer - Javy Gwaltney - 9 / 10.0
Kiwami 2 is more than a great remake: it's the best this strange, wonderful series has to offer and it shouldn't be missed by fans of action or RPG titles

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is clearly the update Yakuza 2 deserved. The very talented people over at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios recreated the riveting Yakuza 2 plot while adding new side quests and activities. Even if a couple of elements from the original game are now missing, Kiwami 2 has more than enough content to keep players glued to their scree to their screens. It must also be noted that the Dragon Engine looks and runs better than it did in Yakuza 6. All in all, Kiwami 2 another great Yakuza game that fans of the series should not miss.
GameSkinny - ElConquistadork - 9 / 10 stars
Whether you're new to the series or just want to see what goofy problems you can get into this time, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is another brilliant entry into the franchise.
GameSpew - Richard Seagrave - 10 / 10.0
Honestly, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the best Yakuza game to date. Its story is gripping and has a brilliant pace, its combat is tighter and more engaging, and there's such a varied range of sub-stories and side activities to absorb yourself in that it offers great longevity

Yakuza Kiwami 2 has easily become one of my favorite games in the Yakuza series. From the action packed story, to the overabundance of side content provided, to the ability to play as Majima again, I honestly have a game that keeps me wanting to come back for more and more, and never want to put the controller down.
GamingBolt - Pramath - 9 / 10.0
Of the four Yakuza releases in the last year and a half, Yakuza Kiwami 2 truly stands as the best of them all, and is the definitive Yakuza experience.
GamingTrend - Nathan Anstadt - 85 / 100
A story of loyalty and honor, it is peerless in the crime fiction genre. The gameplay is so varied and exhaustive even if you tend to simply solve all your problems with your fists. There are some kinks to work out about how it deals with its more lascivious content, but what this game does well, it does so well that all I want to do is get right back in to see what I missed.
GaminGuardian - Alberto Morales Palencia - Spanish - 9 / 10.0
Yakuza Kiwami 2 has been a pleasant surprise for me. We have a good story of intrigues among families of yakuzas to rise to power, with charismatic characters, lots of humor and action, as well as a lot of mini-games and side quests. In case it was not enough, audiovisually fulfills in a remarkable way.
Hobby Consolas - David Martinez - Spanish - 91 / 100
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a great adventure, full of details, minigames and wonderful characters, and it gets a new Goro Majima campaign for this PS4 remaster. Combat system is not as deep as in the first Kiwami, but still, it is one of the best entries in the franchise.
IGN Italy - Alessandra Borgonovo - Italian - 9 / 10.0
Yakuza Kiwami 2 continues to stick to the franchise's strengths, making Kiryu's world deeper.
Just Push Start - Unknown - 4 / 5.0
Yakuza Kiwami 2 might not be perfect but it's a fantastic example of why some things should be remastered. Not only does it perform better than it's PlayStation 2 counterpart, it looks good enough to be within this generation's standards. Add in a fantastic story about honor, family and doing what's right and it's a solid choice for fans of open-worlds. Some sticklers might be put off by some minor issues and newcomers should really consider playing Yakuza Kiwami, despite there being a recap, first, but for everyone else it's a fantastic game worth (re)experiencing.
PlayStation LifeStyle - Paulmichael Contreras - 9 / 10.0
Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a faithful return to a PS2 classic. Whether it's taking in the town, interacting with the people, or running into random restaurants, there's always plenty of things to stay busy doing when not playing the main campaign. Combat still feels a bit stiff, but this should be manageable and overcome with ample inventory room for health items at any rate. Yakuza Kiwami 2 is an easy purchase for anyone who has even a passing interest in the Yakuza series.
PlayStation Universe - John-Paul Jones - 9 / 10.0
An assuredly robust and spectacular remake of the PS2 original, Yakuza Kiwami 2 learns from the lessons of Yakuza 6 to create one of the best entries in the franchise to date.
Push Square - Robert Ramsey - 8 / 10
Adding to a growing list of great PS4 remakes, Yakuza: Kiwami 2 is up there with the best games in SEGA's series. While PS2-era design does rear its ugly head now and again, another brilliantly dramatic story steals the spotlight. Throw in some superb optional content, and you've got a prime Yakuza package that's ultimately very difficult to fault.
Spaziogames - Gianluca Arena - Italian - 8.5 / 10.0
Graphically-wise, Yakuza Kiwami 2 is the best in the franchise so far, but it's not only the Dragon Engine that shines: an array of mini-games, an amazing campaign and improved combat system are the stars of the show.
TechRaptor - Georgina Young - 9 / 10.0
As a remake of a sequel, it's no surprise that Yakuza Kiwami 2 has a lot more on offer than the first title. However, the choice to stick with Yakuza 6's convoluted stats system is an unfortunate blip in what could have been an ideal remake.
VGProfessional - Mazen Abdallah - 8.1 / 10.0
Yakuza Kiwami 2 totally revitalizes an underrated gaming classic and applies the lessons Sega learned throughout the series’ evolution. It’s still unique and even weird at times, and it can still be a little rough around the edges, but few series manage to take you deep into a criminal underworld and tell such compelling stories.
Wccftech - Kai Powell - 9.1 / 10.0
A new antagonist and rippling implications of gang warfare once again drag Kazuma Kiryu back into the action. Between exploring Kamurocho and Sotenbori, ultimately players are going to find out that there's only room for one Dragon in Yakuza Kiwami 2
We Got This Covered - Todd Rigney - 4.5 / 5 stars
Yakuza Kiwami 2 offers the best Yakuza experience money can currently buy, not to mention a story that wouldn't seem out of place in an old Kinji Fukasaku flick.
WellPlayed - Kieron Verbrugge - 8.5 / 10.0
What better way to remake one of the earliest games in a series than by smashing its various pieces together with those of the newest entry? The Yakuza franchise truly is the gift that keeps on giving

There's no denying that Yakuza 3, even in its remastered form, is rough around the edges -- especially if you're coming off the back of Yakuza 6, Kiwami 2, or Judgment -- but this is still one of the series' better instalments, and for our money, the best of the PS3 Yakuza trilogy. Yakuza Kiwami is a ground-up remake of the original Yakuza game, which first launched on PS2 back in 2005. “Oh, not another remake,” you’re probably thinking. Well, let me stop you right there, dear reader and reveal to you that “Kiwami” literally translates to “extreme,” and here’s how Yakuza Kiwami turns remakes on their heads: Yakuza series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi confirms that the Yakuza 3.4 and 5 remasters will not be Kiwami-style remakes. Yakuza 6 has sold around 800,000 to 900,000 worldwide … Yakuza Kiwami was recreated from the ground up exclusively for the PlayStation 4. That means every visual element was optimized for the 1080p/60fps environment, every line of the script was re-recorded by series actors and for the first time in the West, gamers will be able to hear the original Japanese language track. Just to clarify: Yakuza 3 on PS4 will not be a Kiwami 3, but a mere remaster - which is fine, considering the age of the game, but still a huge difference if you played Yakuza 1 and Yakuza 2 and then Kiwami 1 and Kiwami 2.
